How to Start an Interior Design Business – From Passion to Profession

Starting an interior design business isn’t just about knowing how to arrange furniture or pick the right colors — it’s about turning your passion into a purpose. If you’ve always felt drawn to beautiful spaces, textures, and creating harmony in a room, this journey might be exactly for you.

The key? Start small, but start with intention.

1. Find Your Style & Voice

Before offering your services, spend time exploring what makes your style unique. Are you drawn to natural materials? Minimalism? Vintage charm? Or do you love mixing it all together?
For me, the foundation of my work is handcrafted design — everything I create is made or curated by hand, giving each project a personal, one-of-a-kind feel.

2. Build a Portfolio

You don’t need big clients at the beginning. Start with your own home, friends, or smaller local projects. Document every step. Show your process — from sketches to final results. People love to see how ideas come to life.

3. Share Your Story

People don’t just hire designers — they connect with people. Tell your story. Share what inspires you. For example, I often explain how I choose materials, how each piece is made by hand, and why I believe slow design is the future.

4. Create an Online Presence

Even if it’s just Instagram or a simple website — let people find you. Use it as a space to showcase your work, talk about your process, and share your growth. Your future clients are already online, looking for someone like you.

5. Stay Authentic

Trends come and go, but authenticity never fades. Stay true to your creative vision. Your ideal clients will find you — and they’ll love you for exactly what you do.
